Uttarayan In Ahmedabad: How I Spent 2 Days Flying Kites On My Terrace, Dancing Garba & Snacking

There’s no Uttarayan quite like Ahmedabad’s, and that’s exactly why I chose to be there. Every moment of those two days felt unforgettable.

Uttarayan In Ahmedabad: How I Spent 2 Days Flying Kites On My Terrace, Dancing Garba & Snacking

The most-awaited and first festival of the year, Makar Sankranti, is finally over—and what a blast it was! January 14 and 15 were full of energy and non-stop fun. I celebrated the festival in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, where the excitement around Sankranti is truly next level. People say the fest celebration here feels like enjoying Uttarayan, Diwali, and Navratri all at once—and honestly, they’re not wrong. Here’s a peek into how I spent these two unforgettable days!

On the first day, I went up to the terrace around 10 am along with other members of the building. To make sure the fun didn’t stop even for a minute, we had already tied the kinya to our kites a day before, or got it done directly from the store. And of course, no Uttarayan is complete without music! We set up a huge speaker on the terrace and kicked off the day with some great beats.

Kids soon joined us with colourful balloons and the pipudi, instantly setting the perfect Uttarayan vibe. From 10 am to 12 pm, we flew kites non-stop, shouting “kai po che” and “eyyy lapet” at the top of our lungs every time we cut someone’s kite.

Afternoon, we went downstairs to enjoy a delicious chole puri in lunch and took a short break. By around 2:30 pm, we were back on the terrace, ready for round two of kite-flying. Soon, all the ladies from the building joined us with homemade snacks like mamra chikki, til chikki, ber, sugarcane, along with tea and coffee. As the sun began to set, we decided to light up the sky—not with tukkal, but with a viral trend. We tied fairy lights to the kite string, and honestly, it looked magical.

The evening continued with garba and some firecrackers, making the celebration even more lively. After such a long and energetic day, cooking at home was the last thing on our minds. So we headed to Navrang, one of Ahmedabad’s popular street food spots, to enjoy dabeli, Manchurian, masala pav, and pizza. We ended the perfect day with a fun game of cards.

On January 15, as we celebrated Vasi Uttarayan, the energy didn’t drop even a bit. Day two was all about non-stop kite-flying once again. Spending the whole day under the sun, we kept ourselves refreshed with water, Frooti, and other soft drinks. We came fully prepared with caps, sunglasses, balloons, and of course, the pipudi. I even ended up irritating everyone by suddenly blowing the pipudi near their ears—making people jump thanks to the loud surprise!

We clicked some amazing photos and made fun, viral-style reels inspired by social media. And obviously, no celebration is complete without garba and a few firecrackers. Since it was the last day, the number of kites in the sky was even more than the first day, making the experience extra special.

After another full day of kite-flying, we stepped out to enjoy street-style Chinese food. Later, we came back home and gathered at one of our neighbours’ places to play housie. Cash prizes were announced for the winners, which made the game even more exciting.

These two days of Makar Sankranti in Ahmedabad were truly memorable, and I’m sure this is one festival I’ll choose to celebrate in this city every single year.
