Why Does Lord Ganesha Have Only One Tusk?
One popular story involves Parashurama, the warrior sage and a fierce devotee of Lord Shiva.
According to a traditional account, Parashurama once arrived at Mount Kailash hoping to meet Shiva. Ganesha, who was guarding the entrance, refused to let him pass because Shiva was resting.
Neither of them was particularly interested in backing down.
The argument eventually became a fight. Parashurama hurled his divine axe, the parashu, at Ganesha. The weapon had originally been given to Parashurama by Shiva himself.
Lord Ganesha recognised it. Rather than stop the weapon or destroy his father’s gift, he allowed the axe to strike him. One of his tusks was cut off.
And just like that, the elephant-headed god acquired one of his most famous features. Isn’t that fascinating to learn on Ganesh Chaturthi?
Then There’s The Mahabharata Version
There is another much-loved story!
When sage Vyasa decided to dictate the Mahabharata, he chose Ganesha to write it down. Lord Ganesha agreed, but with one condition. Vyasa had to keep dictating without stopping.
Ganesha’s writing instrument broke. Stopping was not an option. So, according to this legend, Ganesha broke off one of his own tusks and used it as a pen, continuing to write the epic.
Considering the Mahabharata is traditionally described as an enormous epic, that is one seriously committed scribe.

Ganesh Chaturthi: What Does Ganesha’s Broken Tusk Symbolise?
That depends on which tradition you hear. In the Parashurama story, the tusk represents respect and restraint. In the Mahabharata story, it represents sacrifice and determination.
There is also a symbolic interpretation. The complete tusk and the broken tusk can represent the idea that wisdom requires knowing what to hold on to and what to let go of.
That makes the missing tusk rather perfect for Lord Ganesha, the god associated with wisdom, intellect and the removal of obstacles.
