The bakery, Basque Bakery, came under scrutiny after its sharp tone and responses drew widespread attention online. Several users pointed out that the replies appeared dismissive, with the bakery resorting to personal remarks and a mocking tone when customers raised concerns about pricing and food quality. What may have been intended as witty or sassy responses was perceived by many as rude.

It all started when a customer commented on a post about the bakery’s ‘High Tea’ service and called it “overhyped”. They further complained about the ₹2,000 table charge. The bakery responded, “The above experience is 16k, bet you can’t afford that either.”

It didn’t stop there. When the user commented on the apparent lack of customers outside the bakery, the brand responded with, “Well, we can’t expect a poor person to understand how an exclusive experience is all about catering to the niche and not a crowd.”

In another reply, the bakery wrote, “Bad math, poor, bad vocabulary. Bye.” A Reddit post shared screenshots of the entire exchange between the two and all the replies from the bakery.

Rude, Not Sassy: Netizens Call Out The Behaviour

Online, netizens expressed their disappointment with the bakery’s tone, saying the responses came across as unnecessarily rude. Some users suggested that the brand may have been attempting to mimic the tongue-in-cheek social media personas of brands like Ryanair and Duolingo, but failed colossally!

“I really hate this whole change that has happened in the last 10 years, where establishments and people have become more about the image and less about the product. These were never the values we grew up with. It was always substance above show,” one comment read.

Another Reddit comment read, “I’ve seen crappy reviews about this place even before, also when one of their reels popped up talking about being overpriced for mediocre food. I guess it’s not fake reviews after all.”

“They’re trying Ryanair kinda marketing. They will soon realise it won’t work here,” one user pointed out.

“The shocking thing is that one slice of cheesecake here is priced at ₹1500+. ONE SLICE. 1kg is ₹16k. I am dead serious. The owners are absolutely delusional,” another comment read.

One user commented, “Thank you for proving that money can’t buy class.”

Another one wrote, “Arrogant staff, poor taste, worst ambience. Bye!”

“That was quite rude, which explains the 3-star rating online,” one of the users wrote.
