Lay’s has taken its love for potatoes beyond the snack aisle with the launch of China’s first-ever potato-themed restaurant in Shanghai. Located in the city’s trendy Xintiandi district, the limited-time pop-up offers visitors a one-of-a-kind dining experience where the brand’s signature chip flavours are reimagined as gourmet, multi-course dishes.

Created in collaboration with Michelin-acclaimed chefs and local restaurant CALIX, the concept is designed to tap into China’s growing love for immersive dining experiences. From themed exhibitions to interactive culinary concepts, experiential dining has become increasingly popular among Chinese consumers, and this restaurant is Lay’s answer to that trend.

The Lay’s restaurant is hard to miss, thanks to its striking bright-yellow exterior inspired by Lay’s iconic branding. Inside, there are interactive spaces that trace the journey of a potato—from farm to chip packet. Complete with potato-themed installations and a giant potato food truck parked outside, the restaurant is as much a visual spectacle as it is a culinary destination.

Potato-Inspired Dishes And Drinks

The menu has been curated by Michelin-acclaimed chef Francesco Bonvini in collaboration with CALIX chef Tian Shuai, who have transformed the humble potato into an inventive gourmet experience.

The offerings blend both sweet and savoury creations, including mashed potato “Polato” cups in flavours such as strawberry chocolate, mango coconut, shrimp salsa, and octopus. People can also try standout dishes like squid ink potato pearl pasta, slow-cooked octopus served with potato mousse, Spanish-style potato omelette, and a range of potato-inspired beverages.

Adding a local twist, the restaurant also features exclusive Shanghai-only chip bowls inspired by regional favourites like crab roe xiaolongbao and tiaotougao, making the menu a playful fusion of global creativity and local flavours.
