The latest viral food trend is the Diet Coke Ice Gola, which is a playful twist on the classic crushed ice gola where chilled Diet Coke is poured over shaved ice instead of the usual colourful syrups.

If you grew up in India, you already know the magic of an ice gola. A mound of finely crushed ice is packed onto a stick or served in a cup, then drenched in vibrant syrups like kala khatta, orange, rose, lemon, or cola. Mmmmm, this detail is enough to make our mouths water. It stains your tongue, freezes your brain, and somehow tastes like summer itself.

Now Gen Z and Diet Coke paglus across India have entered the scene and said: What if we use Diet Coke?

Diet Coke has built a cult following of its own. Introduced by Coca-Cola in 1982, it was created as a sugar-free, low-calorie alternative to regular Coke. While many assume it tastes the same, regular Coke and Diet Coke are very different drinks.

Regular Coke is sweeter, richer, and has a heavier caramel taste because of sugar. Diet Coke tastes lighter and fizzier, with a cleaner cola hit. Fans of Diet Coke often insist it is not a replacement for Coke and is its own category.

How To Make It At Home? 

It is ridiculously easy to make this viral recipe. Take crushed ice and shape it like a gola on a stick, or simply put it into a cup. Pour chilled Diet Coke slowly over the top until the ice absorbs the fizz. Some people add lemon juice, black salt, mint, or a dash of kala khatta syrup for extra flavour. Then eat it immediately before it melts.

It has gone super viral because it combines two things the internet loves: nostalgia and Diet Coke. It is familiar enough to remind people of childhood summers, yet weird enough to spark debate. Some people call it genius, while others say their sanctimonious gola recipe should never be touched. 

Even Diet Coke’s official Instagram account joined the fun, commenting “Okay, this ATE” on a viral reel by creator Somil Motwani, only making the trend even bigger.

So will it replace kala khatta? Never. But will people keep trying it for the reel? Absolutely.
