Huma Qureshi doesn’t need an introduction, but the spread in front of her in our latest episode of Tere Gully Mein did the job anyway! With kebabs collapsing under their own tenderness and shiny kormas carrying that unmistakable Delhi arrogance of “haan, hum hi asli Mughlai hain” at Saleem’s in Delhi, her family’s restaurant, we got into fun conversations with Huma about food and more (but mostly food).
Huma Qureshi Shares A Dosa Disaster
The interviewer casually asked her about her food experiences in Mumbai, and she shifted there from the city that is described as the hub of food, Delhi!
There’s a girl in the story: Saachi, a friend from her early Mumbai days. One afternoon, she suggested they grab a dosa near Mithibai College. Now, you’d expect a typical cautious newcomer response, but Huma? No hesitation! She LOVES South Indian food. The way she said it showed her pure enthusiasm and love for the cuisine.
So they went, and she ordered a simple masala dosa, comfortingly safe, the dosa equivalent of a first friend in a new city. Her friend, however, decided chaos was a food group and ordered a Schezwan Paneer Dosa.
Huma Qureshi reenacted the moment right there at the table, eyebrows raised, hands up: “Teen cuisines ko ek saath kharab kar diya” Everyone laughed. She laughed hardest, mostly at her own horror from that day.
Huma Qureshi Shares Food Fetishes
Then came the beetroot saga. According to Huma, Mumbai has an obsession with beetroot, inside sandwiches, chaats, patties… probably if they could, they’d slip it into toothpaste. She was not so fond of this coup by beetroot in her favourite dishes.
But here’s the twist: Mumbai redeemed itself with one thing: the Bombay Sandwich. Grilled, loaded with chopped vegetables, slathered with chutney, with no unnecessary fusion and no beetroot invasion (sometimes). That sandwich earned respect!
So yes, Delhi may be her forever food home, where gravies are slow-cooked, and flavours don’t need defending. But Mumbai? Mumbai gave her new flavours, new friends, a questionable dosa, and a sandwich she now swears by.

Some memories are born from comfort, and others from confusion. Huma Qureshi has both, and she’ll tell them with the same warmth, as long as there’s good food on the table.
