Coffee lovers, here’s a new morning ritual making the rounds online: adding a clove to your coffee. Yes, that tiny spice sitting in your kitchen cabinet is now being added to morning brews, with claims that it can support digestion, blood sugar and even weight loss. But is there actually anything to this trend, or is it just another viral wellness fad?
Is Clove Coffee Actually Healthy?
Cloves have long been used in spiced coffee, but the newer trend involves adding one clove to your morning cup as a supposed health hack. Cloves contain eugenol, a plant compound that has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, while coffee itself contains several bioactive compounds.
Well, it isn’t unhealthy for most people when used in small culinary amounts, but don’t expect it to work miracles either.
Cloves do contain antioxidant compounds, and research has explored their potential digestive, antimicrobial and blood sugar effects. However, much of this research involves extracts, isolated compounds, laboratory studies or animals. There is currently little direct human evidence showing that adding one clove to coffee delivers these benefits.
And if you’ve heard that clove coffee can help you lose weight, take that claim with a pinch of salt. There is no good evidence that adding cloves to coffee causes meaningful weight loss. Caffeine itself can temporarily influence energy expenditure and appetite, but that doesn’t turn clove coffee into a fat-burning drink.

How To Make Clove Coffee?
If you’re curious, we’d suggest start simple. Lightly crush one whole clove, add it to freshly brewed coffee and let it steep for about two to four minutes before removing it. Cloves have a strong flavour, so adding more isn’t necessarily better.
The bottom line? Add cloves because you enjoy the warm, spicy flavour, not because social media promised a miracle. It can be an interesting twist on your usual coffee, but for now, calling it a proven wellness hack would be stretching the science.
