New Study Says Cocoa Could Actually Support Heart Health In Young Adults Who Sit For Long Hours Daily

Today, the majority of young adults lead a desk-bound lifestyle. Whether it is office or college, they sit for long hours, scroll on phones, and barely move. And this is why doctors are now deeply studying how sitting affects the human body. New research suggests that cocoa could actually offer heart benefits, especially for those who spend long hours sitting.

New research suggests that cocoa might actually support the health of those sitting at one place for long hours. Researchers say that cocoa could give certain heart benefits to people who barely move, making it a surprising support system for today’s desk-bound generation. According to the study published in the Journal of Physiology, young adults today sit for almost six hours at a stretch. It is not only college students, but also office employees who fall under this routine.

The time spent sitting has increased by nearly 18% in the last 20 years. And regular long sitting can increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases even in people who go to the gym or run on some days. Now here is where the cocoa link comes in. The researchers tested 40 young men for this study. They gave them a cocoa-based drink before they went for physical activity like running or cycling. The results were interesting. The men who consumed cocoa with high flavanol levels showed a 1% increase in blood vessel function. This may look like a small number, but experts say this small rise can actually mean 9% lower risk of heart disease.

How Does Cocoa Help

According to Hindustan Times, cocoa has flavanols, which are compounds found in tea and berries, too. These flavanols do not work like exercise. They do not change blood flow in the same way a workout does. But they help keep blood vessels active and responsive. Flavanols support nitric oxide production in the body. Nitric oxide plays a role in keeping blood vessels healthy.

As per the study published in the Journal of Physiology, people must make smart food choices during long desk hours. Small changes in diet can support heart health. So adding cocoa flavanols might offer benefits for young adults who spend most of their day sitting at work or study tables.
