Who says that the leaders who run the country aren’t fond of food? Surely, our former Prime Minister of India, Rajiv Gandhi, was! On the occasion of his 82nd birthday, we came across some surprising facts about him that prove he was a big foodie. Read on to know more! 

Rajiv Gandhi Introduced Baby Naan

In a Lallantop podcast, authors Purabi Shridhar and Sanghita Singh spoke with Kuldeep Mishra about Rajiv Gandhi. They revealed that during his drive to Jammu and Srinagar, Rajiv Gandhi would stop at different cafés and pick random things from the roadside. This often left his security team stressed about his safety.

They also mentioned that Rajiv Gandhi suggested that chefs serve Baby Naans instead of regular bread. The chefs were initially confused, but he asked them to experiment with the idea. He would even taste the Naans himself and give his feedback. Rajiv Gandhi then ate the first batch of Baby Naans and had them served at state banquets.

He Was A Sweet Lover!

As the podcast continues, they also revealed that Rajiv Gandhi was a big foodie and loved sweets. Sonia Gandhi would always be concerned about his diet, as Rajiv Gandhi was not very serious about what he ate.

They also shared a story about Dikshit Ji, the former governor, who was unwell. When Rajiv Gandhi went to visit him, he was served chana chor and biscuits. To everyone’s surprise, Rajiv Gandhi finished everything while sitting on the floor.
