We love exploring iconic and historical places in India that stand as proof of the country’s rich heritage. Now, for our Palaces of India series, we collaborated with Mashable India to explore the 270-year-old Maratha Palace, where the royal family still lives. Stars Dino Morea and Zoya Afroz took us inside the Sawantwadi Palace and shared fascinating details about it. Read on to know more!

What’s Inside The Sawantwadi Palace?

In Curly Tales’ Palaces of India episode, Dino Morea and Zoya Afroz explored the Sawantwadi Palace and spoke about its rich history. Dating back to the era of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the palace left us in awe with its blend of European elegance and Maratha craftsmanship. The palace also keeps the traditional Ganjifa art alive, a card game once played by royals.

Inside the palace, we explored secret chambers, royal thrones, vintage weapons, rare artefacts, hunting trophies, and much more. Spread across seven acres, the palace is divided into two sections. One wing houses the Durbar Hall and museum, while the second wing, Taibsaheb Wada, is where the royal family still lives.

How The Ranis Of This Palace Made History

When you step into the Durbar Hall of the palace, you’ll realise that not only kings but also ranis played a major role in shaping its history. Inside the hall, you’ll find statues of a tiger, black panther, and other animals that were actually hunted by a rani. The palace’s floral flooring was inspired by Taisaheb, who loved flowers.

The palace also preserves a saree that features intricate gold threadwork and hand-painted details. It is difficult to take your eyes off it. The palace still houses the silver throne where royal coronation ceremonies were once held. There was also a section of the palace designed like a home, where festivals and family celebrations took place.
