Could Your Suitcase Reach Kochi Airport Before You? New Home Pickup Service Is Being Tested

Imagine leaving home for the airport without dragging two suitcases down the stairs, squeezing them into a cab, and then hauling them through the terminal. That could become possible at Kochi Airport, where the airport operator is exploring a home baggage pickup service.

Kochi Airport Is Testing a Home Baggage Pickup Service

Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) has allowed an agency to conduct a trial of the proposed service and is assessing whether it can be expanded. The idea is that…instead of passengers carrying their bags all the way to the airport, an agency would collect them from their homes, move them to a warehouse, and then take them to a designated facility outside the airport terminal. The luggage would be digitally tracked through the journey. 

There is, however, an important catch. The bags cannot simply be collected from a house and taken straight into the terminal while the passenger is still on the way. Under the proposed arrangement, passengers would have to reach the airport, collect their luggage from the designated facility and then take it into the terminal themselves. This is because baggage cannot enter the terminal in a passenger’s absence under the security arrangements being considered for the service. 

The concept could be particularly useful for families travelling with several suitcases, senior citizens or anyone dealing with bulky baggage. CIAL is looking at handling both larger bags of around 23 kg and smaller bags of approximately 7 kg.

The proposed service could cover areas well beyond Ernakulam. CIAL is examining a potential operating radius of around 200 km from the airport, although the final coverage will depend on the feasibility study. 

Booking is expected to happen online through the agency’s website. The pricing has not been fixed yet, but the proposed structure is expected to take both baggage weight and travel distance into account.

How This Process Works

And this would not necessarily be a one-way service. Passengers arriving at Kochi could also hand over their luggage outside the terminal for delivery elsewhere in Kerala. For example, someone flying back from Mumbai could have their bags collected and sent onwards to another destination.

The proposal is being worked out in two phases. The first would operate independently of airlines. A later phase could connect the service with airport-side offerings such as meet-and-greet and baggage assistance, potentially helping passengers move their luggage from the designated facility to the check-in counter. 

The proposal also fits into CIAL’s wider push towards reducing friction around baggage. Kochi already has self-bag-drop facilities at Terminal 1, where eligible passengers can print their boarding passes and bag tags at self-service kiosks before dropping their luggage themselves. CIAL says the facility is integrated with its baggage-handling system.

For now, though, this is still a trial rather than a service passengers can routinely book. CIAL has not finalised the launch date, service area or pricing. The ongoing assessment will determine whether the home pickup model is commercially and operationally viable.
