According to NDTV, Delhi Metro has recorded an impressive 99.95% train punctuality rate, putting it ahead of several major metro systems around the world. Despite its massive expansion over the years, the network has continued to maintain high levels of reliability, outperforming systems such as the Hong Kong Metro, Paris Metro and New York Subway.
In a post on X, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) highlighted that Delhi Metro has surpassed several well-established metro networks in terms of punctuality and reliability. It said the achievement further strengthens the city’s position among the world’s leading urban rail systems.

What Counts As A Delay For DMRC?
What makes this figure even more impressive is how strictly Delhi Metro defines a delay. While many metro networks may consider a train late only after a few minutes, DMRC counts a train as delayed if it reaches its destination even 60 seconds behind schedule.
In its post, DMRC also pointed out that its punctuality has steadily improved over the years. The punctuality rate stood at 98.27% in 2003 before rising to 99.64% in 2005, helping Delhi Metro cross the 99% mark within just two years of operations. Since then, it has consistently maintained punctuality levels of around 99.9% year after year.
The metro has also managed to reduce train waiting times significantly. From a headway of around seven minutes in its early years, trains now run as frequently as every 2 minutes and 18 seconds on some of the busiest corridors.
