At railway stations in Mumbai, you’ll often see people rushing to catch trains and reach their destinations. But what if we told you there’s now a space waiting to be explored? Book lovers, take note! Western Railway and Project Mumbai have launched a free public library at Churchgate Station. Read on to know more!
Western Railway Opens Public Library At Churchgate Station
Western Railway and Project Mumbai have together opened a library at Churchgate station. What makes it interesting is that it is free for everyone to step inside and read their favourite books. Known as “Library Junction,” the facility was opened on World Environment Day at the station’s South Concourse area. Former South African cricketer and captain AB de Villiers inaugurated the free public library.
As per Mid Day, for this project, Project Mumbai collaborated with the Mumbai Central Division of Western Railway, while L&T Ltd. joined as the social initiative partner. The library has been introduced at Churchgate station to give passengers easy access to their favourite books. It also aims to encourage a reading habit among commuters.

How Does This Library Support Sustainability?
Library Junction is part of Project Mumbai’s Read Mumbai campaign. What impressed us the most was that the space also supports environmental sustainability. Workers built the library using recycled plastic collected through the organisation’s Plastic Recyclathon campaign.
If you’re visiting this space, the Mumbai library currently houses around 1,200 books across different categories. Readers will find books from fiction, non-fiction, self-help books, autobiographies, children’s literature, comics, yoga books and popular magazines. A librarian will remain available from 8 AM to 8 PM to help visitors. Commuters can borrow books free of cost and return them within two weeks.
