There was a time when Indian pet parents planning a trip had only two options: cancel the vacation or guilt-call the neighbour twice a day. That is changing fast! Airlines in India are finally catching up to a truth pet owners have known forever, dogs and cats are family, not luggage. Flying with them is no longer a bizarre request whispered nervously at check-in counters; it is now a real and growing travel category.

New Airline Rules For Pet Travel

The biggest relief has come for owners of smaller pets. Airlines such as Air India and Akasa Air now allow eligible cats and dogs to travel inside the cabin on selected domestic routes. Air India permits pets weighing up to 10 kg, and that total includes the carrier.

According to Air India and Akasa Air, the bag matters as much as the beagle. Booking is usually required at least 48 hours before departure because airlines need time to approve space, verify documents, and manage onboard pet limits. Once onboard, the pet must remain inside the carrier under the seat in front of you.

Weight is where the rules become serious. Pets above 10 kg often shift to checked baggage or specially managed hold sections, depending on the airline and aircraft. Between 10 kg and 32 kg is the common range where this happens.

Animals above 32 kg are generally moved through cargo channels. That sounds harsh, but large-breed logistics involve safety, temperature control, crate handling, and aircraft design. Not every plane can accommodate every animal!

Indian Airline Rules To  Make Pet Travel Easy

Now for the carrier itself, the unsung hero of pet travel! Airlines usually insist on a soft-sided kennel for cabin travel. It must fit below the seat, be leak-proof, properly ventilated on at least three sides, and should not have wheels. Many carriers around 17 x 10 x 9 inches meet common cabin expectations, but smart travellers check exact airline measurements instead of trusting random marketplace listings.

Documents can decide the trip faster than your ticket can. Carry vaccination records, anti-rabies proof, a recent fitness or health certificate from a registered veterinarian, ID papers where needed, and any indemnity forms requested by the airline. Keep printed copies too, as phones can die at the worst moments.

Some pets cannot fly though, as most airlines require animals to be at least eight weeks old. Pregnant pets, sedated animals, and those unfit to travel are commonly refused. Usually, one pet per passenger is the norm, and flights may cap total pet numbers.

Want the journey to go smoothly? Feed lightly before departure, arrive early, line the carrier with absorbent pads, and let your pet practise spending time in the carrier days before travel; because the calmer the rehearsal, the easier the runway.
