Planning a group trip sounds exciting until the itinerary starts to be seriously decided. Someone wants to jump off a cliff attached to a bungee cord; someone else wants to sleep in, sip coffee with a view, and maybe browse a local market. So, these eight group travel Indian destinations strike the balance perfectly, offering enough adventure for thrill-seekers and plenty of laid-back experiences for those who prefer a calmer pace.

Planning For Group Travel? These 8 Indian Destinations Keep Everyone Happy

1. Rishikesh, Uttarakhand

If there were a group travel destination made specifically to solve this travel dilemma, Rishikesh would probably be it.

One half of your group can spend the morning battling Grade III and Grade IV rapids on the Ganga, jump off platforms for India’s highest bungee experiences, zip across valleys, or trek to hidden waterfalls sitting inside the surrounding forests. It’s the kind of place where every few kilometres, someone is offering another way to get your heart racing.

The other half doesn’t have to pretend they’re interested. Instead, they can wander through the Beatles Ashram covered in fascinating graffiti, spend hours at riverside cafes overlooking the Ganga, join a yoga session, browse bookstores, or simply sit on the ghats watching life unfold. The evening Ganga Aarti at Triveni Ghat is something everyone usually ends up attending together, regardless of how they spent the day.

2. Auli, Uttarakhand

People usually think of Auli as a skiing destination, but that’s selling it short. Yes, winter transforms it into one of India’s best skiing destinations, with snowboarding, chairlifts and powder-covered slopes. When the snow melts, trekking trails leading to Gorson Bugyal, camping experiences, and mountain hikes take over. If someone in your group measures holidays by the number of steps on their smartwatch, they’ll be super happy here!

But hey, you could also spend an afternoon with nothing more ambitious than sipping hot chocolate while looking at Nanda Devi, wandering around Joshimath’s quiet streets, or reading a book on the balcony of your resort.

3. Gokarna, Karnataka

Goa often dominates conversations about beach holidays, but Gokarna does something better; it lets you choose your own version of peace.

Adventure lovers usually set off early for the famous beach trek connecting Om Beach, Half Moon Beach and Paradise Beach. Add surfing lessons, kayaking, paddleboarding, cliff viewpoints and boat rides into the mix, and the day practically plans itself.

Meanwhile, someone else in the group might never leave a beach cafe!  You can watch fishermen bring in the day’s catch, browse tiny local shops, visit the centuries-old Mahabaleshwar Temple, order another coconut because there’s nowhere you urgently need to be, and wait for one of the most beautiful sunsets on India’s west coast.

4. Jaisalmer, Rajasthan

The Thar Desert somehow manages to satisfy people looking for action and those chasing old-world charm!

The adventurous travellers will disappear into the dunes on quad bikes, race across the desert in jeeps, ride camels into the sunset, or spend the night camping under skies so full of stars they almost don’t look real.

The others will probably still be inside Jaisalmer Fort!  And that’s not a bad thing. It’s one of the few living forts in the world, where homes, cafes, temples and shops still exist beautifully behind centuries-old walls. Hours disappear while wandering its narrow lanes. Patwon Ki Haveli and Nathmal Ki Haveli host oh-so-extraordinary craftsmanship, rooftop cafes overlook the honey-coloured city, and every little shop seems to sell something you didn’t know you wanted.

5. Meghalaya

You might start your morning walking through clouds, spend the afternoon beside water so clear the boats appear to float in mid-air, and end the day listening to live music in Shillong.

For adventure enthusiasts, the state eats, and how! Trekking to the Double Decker Living Root Bridge is almost a rite of passage. There are limestone caves to squeeze through, waterfalls hidden behind forest trails, kayaking opportunities, cliff viewpoints and mountain hikes too!

But wait, not everyone wants that. Shillong is perfectly capable of stealing an entire weekend on its own. Independent cafes, bookstores, local markets, art spaces and live music venues create a different mood. Then there’s Mawlynnong, often celebrated for its remarkable cleanliness, where slow village walks are more rewarding than busy itineraries.

6. Dandeli, Karnataka

Dandeli rarely makes those “Top 10 group travel places in India” lists, which is why it deserves to. Adventure lovers know it well! White-water rafting on the Kali River is the biggest draw, but there’s also kayaking, river crossing, ziplining, jungle trekking, mountain biking and cave exploration.

Meanwhile, someone who has absolutely no interest in helmets or harnesses can still have a fantastic holiday. The forests around Dandeli are home to hundreds of bird species, making birdwatching incredibly rewarding. Coracle rides drift gently along calm stretches of the river, eco-resorts encourage slow mornings instead of packed schedules, and wildlife safaris offer the chance to spot deer, bison and, if you’re lucky, even black panthers in the surrounding landscape.

7. Andaman & Nicobar Islands

The Andamans have a clever way of making everyone happy!

Adventure seekers head underwater almost too quickly. Scuba diving around Havelock Island reveals coral reefs teeming with marine life, while snorkelling, sea walking, kayaking through mangroves, and game fishing keep the itinerary full.

The rest of the group often laughs because they don’t need an itinerary at all. Radhanagar Beach has repeatedly earned its reputation as one of Asia’s finest beaches for good reason. Soft white sand, impossibly blue water, and long, peaceful sunsets make doing absolutely nothing feel like a productive day. Ferry rides between islands, visits to the historic Cellular Jail, seafood lunches overlooking the ocean and long beach walks are more than enough.

Sometimes, paradise doesn’t ask much from you except to stay a little longer.

8. Lachung, Sikkim

For those chasing adventure, the drive to Lachung itself is part of the (magical) experience. High-altitude roads lead towards Yumthang Valley and Zero Point, where sweeping landscapes replace heavy tourist crowds. Trekking routes weave through alpine meadows, rivers rush alongside mountain roads, and every turn feels like another postcard view.

The slower travellers won’t mind taking their time. Buddhist monasteries add a sense of calm to the village, traditional wooden homes line quiet streets, and if you visit during spring, rhododendrons transform entire hillsides into shades of pink and red.
