Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey doesn’t rely on elaborate sets or CGI landscapes to bring Homer’s story to life. Instead, the filmmaker travelled across six countries over 91 days, choosing real places that are rich in history and mythology. From ancient cave systems considered to be linked with Greek legends to mediaeval fortresses overlooking the Mediterranean, these places are landmarks in their own right. If the film has left you dreaming of Odysseus’ journey, here are five places you can visit to experience the world.

5 Places You Can Visit To Live The Odyssey Experience

1. Aït Benhaddou, Morocco

The ancient fortified village of Aït Benhaddou serves as the legendary city of Troy in the film. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this magnificent ksar dates back to at least the 11th century and was once an important stop on the trans-Saharan trade route. Built from mud brick and surrounded by desert landscapes, it has also appeared in films such as Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia and Game of Thrones.

2. Nestor’s Cave & Voidokilia Beach, Greece

Perched atop the crescent-shaped Voidokilia Beach in the Peloponnese is Nestor’s Cave, believed in Greek mythology to be associated with King Nestor. According to the news, it also inspired the cave of the Cyclops in Homer’s Odyssey. The dramatic sea views, crystal-clear waters and historical importance make this one of Greece’s most notable mythological sites.

3. Culbin Forest, Scotland

Located along Scotland’s Moray coast, Culbin Forest serves as the haunting backdrop for the Laestrygonians’ territory in the film. The forest consists of thousands of hectares of pine woodland and sand dunes created after a devastating 17th-century sandstorm buried farmland in the region. Today, it is a peaceful nature reserve popular for hiking, cycling and wildlife spotting.
