PM Modi Inaugurates New Leh Airport Terminal, 298-Km Road To Boost Ladakh Connectivity

Planning a trip to Ladakh? Getting to the Himalayan region could become more convenient, thanks to two major infrastructure developments. PM Narendra Modi has inaugurated a new passenger terminal at Leh Airport and a 298-km road connecting Nimmu in Leh to Darcha in Himachal Pradesh, as part of development projects worth around ₹3,350 crore. Here’s what travellers should know about these developments.

Leh Airport Gets A New ₹640-Crore Terminal

If you’ve flown to Ladakh, you’ll know that Leh is often the starting point for exploring the region’s dramatic mountain landscapes, high-altitude lakes and remote villages. With tourism growing, the new terminal at Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport is designed to accommodate more travellers and improve the airport experience.

According to The Times of India, built at a cost of approximately ₹640 crore, the terminal spans around 23,800 square metres and can handle 35 lakh passengers annually. That’s a significant increase from the airport’s earlier annual passenger-handling capacity of around 10 lakh.

The terminal combines modern passenger facilities with architectural elements inspired by Ladakh’s cultural heritage. It also incorporates geothermal heating and solar energy to improve energy efficiency and reduce its environmental footprint—an important consideration in a region known for its fragile ecosystem and extreme weather conditions.

For travellers, the expanded terminal is expected to improve passenger convenience and support better air connectivity as more people make their way to Ladakh.

PM Modi Inaugurates New 298-Km Long Alternative Route To Ladakh

The second major development is the 298-km Nimmu–Padum–Darcha Road, built by the Border Roads Organisation. Connecting Nimmu in Leh with Darcha in Himachal Pradesh, the route passes through the remote Zanskar Valley and crosses the high-altitude Shinkun La Pass.

The road provides an alternative connectivity corridor to Ladakh, supplementing the existing Srinagar–Leh and Manali–Leh highways. According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the new route can reduce travel time on the relevant journey from around 12 hours to three hours.

Beyond making travel more convenient, the road is expected to improve access to healthcare, education, markets and essential services for residents of Zanskar. It also has strategic importance, as it can strengthen logistical support and mobility for the armed forces.

The new road is part of a broader expansion of infrastructure across Ladakh. According to figures shared by the Prime Minister, the region’s road network has grown from around 1,800 km in 2019 to more than 4,000 km. The number of major bridges has also increased from 19 to nearly 75.
