The 3,000-Year-Old Chandravalli Caves Near Bengaluru Hold Secrets Of Revenge And Global Trade

Just four hours from Bengaluru lies a 3,000-year-old cave holding within it secrets of revenge and global trade. Inside, photography is forbidden. The only purpose your mobile serves is as a torch. If you get distracted, you may stumble down the jagged, rock-cut steps—or worse, get lost in a pitch-dark labyrinth, where the only person who knows the way out is your tour guide. You are in Chandravalli Caves, and to know what brought you here, you must embrace the dark— like the people who once lived here— and let your senses lead the way.

Inside The 80-ft Underground Chandravalli Caves

The only way to enter the Chandravalli Cave network is with a tour guide. You are not permitted to enter alone, just like you aren’t permitted to click photos. It’s not for the claustrophobic or the faint-hearted. Hidden away between towering monolithic boulders, 3 km from Chitradurga Fort, the elusive cave has another name: Ankali Math, for one of its residents, a saint named Ankalagi, ran an underground Gurukul centuries ago.

Armed with a torch light, a tour guide (in small batches) takes you 80 feet underground into a cave carved into solid rock. For the vertically challenged, height turns into a blessing. Low ceilings, narrow passageways and underground chambers require you to bend and crawl your way through. A reminder of how you’ve left the 21st century behind and entered the Iron Age.

Home To Shiva Lingas & Global Currency

At Chandravalli Caves, pitch dark is an understatement. For without a torchlight, you cannot even see the silhouette of your hand. “You can step into the shoes of a blind man for a bit,” whispers the guide. Perhaps this is exactly why ascetics chose this cave as their dwelling. It’s a space that leaves you with no choice but to be mindful. To trust your senses.

Inside, there are Shiva Lingas, chambers with stone bedding, broken carvings of deities, chipped-off paintings, small windows for natural ventilation, ancient kitchens, bathrooms, conference halls and lamp niches. The maze-like dwelling has multiple entrances, some leading nowhere to confuse intruders. The cave is intelligently carved like a fortress for safety and obscurity. Those who called it home trained in darkness to memorise the layout.

Its history is so fascinating that renowned archaeologist Mortimer Wheeler of Mohenjo-Daro was deployed in 1947 to uncover its mystery. What archaeologists found is mind-boggling. Chandravalli Cave’s findings included coins of Roman Emperor Augustus and Chinese Emperor Wu of the Han dynasty, evidence of ancient India’s expansive global trade network.

The Tale Of Revenge

The cave holds many secrets. In its chambers, it has hosted foreign traders, housed sages and witnessed a tale of revenge. A tale that starts with Mayurasharma, an ascetic who was humiliated by a royal guard from the Pallava dynasty.

So grievous was the humiliation that the ascetic took up arms and changed his identity. He became Mayuraverma, a Kshatriya (warrior). Taking advantage of the ongoing political instability, the saint-turned-warrior avenged his dishonour with rebellion. His victory resulted in an independent Kadamba kingdom. The first native dynasty of Karnataka in the mid-4th century CE.

Inscriptions attributed to King Mayuraverma were discovered at the nearby Bhairaveshvara Temple, proof that the king had visited the cave.

Ankali Math also houses the Panchalingeshwara shrine, connected to the Mahabharata. The lore suggests the Pandavas consecrated five Shiva Lingas at the shrine during their time of exile.
