Most travellers entering an airport expect to pick up a basic baggage trolley and move on. At Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, that experience looks a little different. The airport has a fleet of technology-enabled “smart trolleys” designed to guide passengers through the terminal while also helping airport staff manage thousands of carts more efficiently.
Hyderabad Airport’s Smart IoT Trolleys Improve Passenger Experience
According to Times Now, the project comes from GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd (GHIAL), which is gradually building what it describes as a Smart Airport City. Rather than treating baggage trolleys as loose equipment scattered across the terminal, the airport has connected them to a digital system that tracks their location and usage in real time.
Around 3,000 trolleys operating at the airport are linked through a Long Range Internet of Things (IoT) platform. The system continuously monitors where each trolley is positioned inside the terminal. For passengers, this means finding an available trolley becomes easier even during rush hours when demand is high.
What passengers immediately notice is the screen attached to the trolley handle. The display resembles a small tablet and functions like an interactive travel assistant. Instead of walking around looking for airport screens or information counters, travellers can access key details directly from the trolley they are pushing.
The process begins when a passenger taps the “Start Now” option on the screen. The system then asks users to scan the QR code on their boarding pass. If the QR scan does not work, the screen provides an alternative option called “Find Your Flight,” allowing travellers to search for their flight manually from a list.

Smart Trolleys: All Features You Should Know About
Once the correct flight is selected, the trolley screen shows the passenger’s gate number, departure time, and flight status. The display continues updating information so travellers can stay aware of any changes during their time at the airport.
The trolley’s screen also works as a navigation tool inside the terminal. It displays airport access routes, directions to boarding gates, and locations of stores and other services available within the airport. For travellers unfamiliar with the layout, the trolley effectively doubles as a moving airport guide.
Behind the scenes, the system serves another purpose, and that is managing the airport’s trolley fleet. Because each trolley is connected to the IoT platform, the airport can monitor where they are being used and how they move across different parts of the terminal. This helps staff redistribute trolleys to areas experiencing higher passenger traffic.

What Problems Does It Solve?
The technology also addresses a long-standing issue airports face worldwide, which is trolley loss. The smart system includes an in-built alert feature that triggers when a trolley moves outside designated airport zones. When that happens, the platform generates a notification identifying the trolley’s location, allowing staff to retrieve it quickly.
The platform is also capable of analysing estimated passenger traffic based on arrival and departure schedules. With this predictive insight, airport teams can position trolleys in advance near areas where demand is expected to rise.
International Air Transport Association (IATA) guidelines suggest that airports should maintain at least 160 baggage trolleys for every one million passengers to ensure smooth operations. Hyderabad Airport’s IoT-powered trolley management system is designed to maintain availability while improving efficiency in how those trolleys are distributed across the terminal, as stated by Times Now.

The idea may seem simple; it is a baggage trolley with a screen, but it reflects a bigger change taking place in modern airports. Infrastructure upgrades are no longer limited to runways and terminals, and even everyday travel tools are being redesigned with technology, data tracking, and passenger convenience in mind.
