Travel is not just about exploring new places but also about giving us time to relax, feel happy and take a break from our daily hustle. If you’re wondering what makes a trip truly worthwhile, Booking.com has answered this through its new Travel Happiness Index. The index looks at the emotional, financial and social factors that shape our travel experiences. Read on to know more! 

How Do Travellers Feel Before A Trip?

For Booking.com’s Travel Happiness Index, insights from 10,000 travellers across 10 APAC markets, including India, were considered. As per the report, travel makes Indian travellers feel happier and better. 99% of them connect travel with positive feelings. Also, 90% say looking forward to a trip improves their mood, while 77% feel it helps them deal with everyday stress and responsibilities.

For 82% of Indian travellers, going on trips is important for their happiness and wellbeing. When they travel, 55% feel happy, 46% feel relaxed, and 43% feel excited. Moreover, 82% of Indian travellers say planning helps them feel more in control, while 80% like to plan their itinerary in advance. When it comes to travelling, 41% want to spend quality time with family, 37% want a break from their daily routine, and 32% travel to enjoy good food and dining experiences.

Travel Can Bring Pressure Too

But wait! Not everyone has responded positively. Around 29% of travellers say they feel tired or drained after a trip, while 24% feel the pressure to make every moment count. Some also feel uncertain (22%) or anxious (20%) while travelling. 

Travellers now don’t want packed itineraries. 28% enjoy spending quality time with their travel companions, while 26% love exploring beautiful natural views. Around 16% say good food and drinks make their trips more enjoyable. Family trips are also a favourite, with 68% of Indian travellers saying they enjoy travelling with their families the most.

Travellers are also planning their holidays more thoughtfully. 78% prefer trying local food and experiencing meaningful activities, while 69% choose travel dates or destinations based on deals. Around 71% extend their trips to get more time to relax.

Though people are travelling, some concerns still remain. Issues like health risks (33% each), crime (29%), inflation (28%) and political instability (24%) may create challenges, but they are not stopping people from exploring. Also, 70% of travellers feel more confident about affording trips than before. Meanwhile, 96% are ready to adjust their plans if something unexpected happens. Among them, 28% choose similar alternative destinations, 19% prefer to postpone their trips, and another 19% change their travel dates or trip duration.

Technology has become a helpful travel partner for many people. Around 84% of Indian travellers say digital tools make planning and booking trips easier. 77% find it simpler to compare options, while 75% say technology helps them discover new places and experiences. Also, 87% feel more comfortable booking their trips through trusted platforms.
