Jaggery is something we use all year round, especially during festivals and when making homemade sweets. As per NDTV, since the demand is high and the market value is good, some people mix cheaper things like sugar, chalk powder, or baking soda to change the colour, texture, or weight. And honestly, that’s something we all want to avoid when buying something for our family, right? One common trick is mixing baking soda, which can make jaggery look smoother and more attractive.
To help people stay safe, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) shared a simple home test. They even posted a video on social media showing how easy it is. You can actually try this at home with just a small piece of jaggery. Just take about one-fourth teaspoon of crushed jaggery and put it in a small glass or test tube. Then add around 3 ml of hydrochloric acid and just watch what happens, yes, it’s that simple!

Adulterared Or Safe?
Now comes the interesting part! If you don’t see any bubbles, your jaggery is probably pure. But if you see bubbles forming, it may mean the jaggery is adulterated. Those bubbles appear because baking soda reacts with hydrochloric acid and releases carbon dioxide gas. It’s a quick and easy way to check basic purity at home before using jaggery in your food.
FSSAI also reminds people that home tests are only a first check. Laboratory testing is the only way to confirm purity completely. If you want to buy good-quality jaggery, follow some simple tips.
1. Always make sure that packaged jaggery has the FSSAI licence number.
2. Avoid jaggery that looks too bright or shiny. Buy darker jaggery, as it is usually less processed.
3. Buy from trusted brands or reliable, known vendors.
