Built at a whopping cost of ₹60 crore, the 132-metre-long and 8-metre-wide Bajrang Setu is one of Rishikesh’s most-awaited developments. As per a report by The Times of India, the bridge will feature a five-metre steel deck for two-wheelers. Not just that, the bridge will also have 1.5-metre glass footpaths on both sides for pedestrians. This means you’ll get a clear view of the River Ganga flowing beneath you as you walk across the bridge. Reportedly, construction for Bajrang Setu began in 2022, and as per officials, it has now entered its final stage. The bridge is expected to be completed by the end of December and open for public use by early 2026.
For the uninitiated, Bajrang Setu was planned as a modern alternative to the century-old Laxman Jhula, the historic suspension bridge over the River Ganga that had become a landmark of Rishikesh, Uttarakhand. However, it was declared unsafe and closed to traffic in 2019. A detailed project report for its replacement was completed in 2020, but actual construction began two years later.

Praveen Karnwal, Executive Engineer of the Public Works Department’s Narendra Nagar Division, shared with TOI that about 90% of the work on Bajrang Setu is complete. The installation of the glass panels on the pedestrian walkway is the only major task pending. Authorities expect the bridge to be fully ready by December 2025 and handed over to the administration early next year. Here is another video of the under-construction Bajrang Setu, posted by X user, @Sumita327.
The pedestrian glass footpaths will be made of 66-mm-thick transparent glass, offering breathtaking views of the Ganga below. The central section of the bridge will cater to two-wheeler traffic. Moreover, it is designed to handle heavy pedestrian movement safely. With its modern design, Bajrang Setu is also expected to boost tourism in the holy town of Rishikesh.
