Good news! The Indian government has launched Bharat Taxi to challenge private players like Ola and Uber. Its pilot phase is all set to begin in November in Delhi with 650 vehicles and their owner-drivers. Here’s everything you need to know about India’s first cooperative taxi service.
Bharat Taxi To Soon Hit The Roads In Delhi

The new initiative Bharat Taxi is being developed under the Union Ministry of Cooperation in collaboration with the National e-Governance Division (NeGD). As per a report by News18, this government-backed project aims to create a fair, driver-owned alternative in the app-based transport sector. It directly challenges cab services like Ola and Uber, which have long dominated the market.
For years, complaints about app-based taxi services have been piling up. Many commuters have raised issues about dirty vehicles, inflated fares, and sudden cancellations. On the other hand, several drivers have expressed disappointment over the high commission rates charged by these companies, with some losing up to 25% of their fare revenue.

Pilot Phase To Begin In November
Bharat Taxi aims to change this system. Drivers under the new model will not pay any commission on their rides. Instead, they will work under a membership model by contributing a nominal daily, weekly, or monthly fee. This could allow drivers to earn more and work more independently.
According to a report by NDTV, the pilot phase of Bharat Taxi will begin in November in Delhi with 650 vehicles and their owner-drivers. The government plans a full-scale rollout in December. If the pilot phase is successful, the service will expand to other major cities, including Mumbai, Pune, Bhopal, Lucknow, and Jaipur in the coming year.
Around 5,000 drivers, both men and women, will participate in the initial nationwide phase. By 2030, the Bharat Taxi platform is expected to include 1 lakh drivers, covering district headquarters, rural areas, and major cities. Unlike privately owned corporations, this platform will function as a cooperative enterprise.
The service will be operated by Sahakar Taxi Cooperative Limited, established in June 2025 with an initial capital of ₹300 crore.
So, soon Bharat Taxi will be on Indian roads, ready to compete with Ola and Uber. What do you think of this new initiative? Do let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
