Canada Changes Rules For Student Visas
According to News18, Canada has now changed some important rules for its international student programme in 2026. Students planning to apply this year for a student visa will face higher financial requirements and stricter verification of admission documents. In simple language, a student will have to show more funds to pass the visa check.
For study permit applications submitted on or after September 1, 2026, a student applying to study in a province or territory other than Quebec must show C$23,448 (₹1,608,207 approx) in funds for living expenses. This amount will not go towards your tuition fees. It is meant to cover living costs. Previously, the required amount was C$22,895 (₹1,566,000 approx.).
New Visa Rules To Impact Indian Students
The financial requirement will further increase if a student comes to Canada accompanied by family members. According to News18, this new change is a part of Canada’s effort to manage the number of temporary residents in the country.
Under Canada’s 2026-2028 Immigration Levels Plan, the government has set a target of 155,000 new student arrivals in 2026. But, the immigration authorities are expected to issue a maximum of 180,000 study permits in 2026 to those who need a provincial or territorial attestation letter. It should be noted that most international students now need a provincial or territorial attestation letter before applying for a study permit.
