Cyclone Montha Wreaks Havoc In Andhra Pradesh; Roads Flooded, Flights And Trains Cancelled

The powerful storm made landfall between Kakinada and Machilipatnam, disrupting normal life across coastal Andhra. Roads flooded, trees uprooted, and thousands were moved to shelters for safety. IMD says the cyclone is now weakening as it moves further inland.

As predicted by the weather department, Cyclone Montha has now severely impacted Andhra Pradesh. The powerful storm hit the region on Tuesday evening, bringing strong winds, heavy rain, and widespread disruption across Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. Cyclone Montha Makes Landfall In Andhra Pradesh

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the landfall process began around 7 pm, with wind speed reaching up to 100 km per hour. Coastal districts, including Kakinada, Visakhapatnam, Konaseema, Krishna, West Godavari, and Vizianagaram, experienced intense rain and gusty winds throughout the day, forcing authorities to issue a red alert, reported The Indian Express.

In Andhra Pradesh’s Konaseema district, a woman lost her life in Makanagudem village when a palmyra tree fell on her during the storm. The government suspended vehicle movement in cyclone-hit areas such as Krishna, Eluru, and Kakinada from 8:30 pm on Tuesday till 6 am on Wednesday to ensure public safety. Only emergency medical vehicles were allowed on the roads during this time.

Crops And Travel Affected

Agriculture suffered heavy losses as strong winds and rain damaged crops. As per The Indian Express, standing crops across 38,000 hectares and horticulture crops on about 1.38 lakh hectares of land were destroyed. Nearly 76,000 people were evacuated and shifted to relief shelters, while 219 medical camps were set up to assist those in need. Community kitchens were also activated in cyclone shelters to provide hot meals to children, the elderly, and other affected families.

Authorities deployed 11 NDRF and 12 SDRF teams to handle rescue and evacuation efforts. Fire and rescue departments positioned boats, life jackets, and emergency tools across coastal regions to respond quickly to any crisis. The Cyclone Montha also caused massive disruption to transportation. The Indian Railways cancelled, diverted, or rescheduled several trains in the Waltair Division under the East Coast Railway Zone. The South Central Railway cancelled about 120 trains on Monday and Tuesday. Air travel was also affected, with all 32 flights from Visakhapatnam Airport cancelled on Tuesday due to severe weather conditions.

Cyclone Montha Weakens After Landfall

According to the IMD, Cyclone Montha is now weakening as it moves inland. As of early Wednesday morning, the storm was centred near coastal Andhra Pradesh, about 80 km northwest of Narsapur, 100 km west of Kakinada, and 90 km north of Machilipatnam. It has been moving north-northwest at a speed of around 15 km per hour and is expected to weaken into a deep depression within the next three hours. Further, it will move into a depression in the following six hours, while moving across parts of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
