Dhanteras 2026 is all set to be celebrated on November 6, marking the official beginning of the five-day Diwali festival. The festival is celebrated to welcome wealth, prosperity and good health. Here’s all you need to know about the muhurat timings, rituals and more.
Dhanteras 2026: Date & Significance
Dhanteras is traditionally associated with buying gold, silver, utensils and other valuable items. They believe that doing so brings good fortune to their homes. People celebrating the festival also offer prayers to Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Kubera and Lord Dhanvantari. This year, Dhanteras 2026 will be observed on Friday, November 6. The word Dhanteras comes from two words: ‘Dhan’, meaning wealth, and ‘Teras’, referring to the 13th day of the lunar fortnight.
Here are the timings for Trayodashi, or the 13th lunar day:
- Trayodashi Tithi begins: 10:30 am on November 6
- Trayodashi Tithi ends: 10:47 am on November 7
One of the most important rituals observed on this day is Yama Deepam. People light a diya outside their homes in the evening to seek the blessings of Lord Yama, the god of death, and pray for the long life of their family members.

How To Perform The Yama Deepam Ritual?
You should light the Yama Deepam at sunset, and don’t worry, you don’t need anything fancy. Take a diya, preferably a four-faced diya, and place four cotton wicks inside, pointing in four directions. After that, fill the diya with mustard or sesame oil. Outside your main entrance, place a handful of uncooked rice grains on the ground. This will act as a seat for the diya.
Light all the wicks, carry the diya outside and place it on the bed of rice. Make sure the diya faces the south direction, as south is the direction of Lord Yama. And yes, pray sincerely to him and walk back inside your home.
