The blaze at the hotel erupted around 2 am on Free School Street (Mirza Ghalib Street), near New Market, one of Kolkata’s busiest areas. According to NDTV, the fire and thick smoke trapped several guests inside the building. At least nine people, including a child, were killed in the unfortunate incident. Several Bangladeshi nationals were among those who lost their lives. They were visiting Kolkata for medical treatment. An X user, @SanviUpdates posted the pictures of the building where the incident took place.
Reportedly, initial investigations found that the hotel lacked basic fire safety measures. Kolkata Police have now registered a case and launched a search for the hotel owner and staff members, who are on the run. Six people were also injured, and around 60 people were rescued from the building during the operation.

Police Investigate Cause Of Fire
According to India Today, several people lost consciousness and fainted after inhaling smoke. They were taken to hospital. The exact cause of the fire is unknown, and police have detained two hotel staff members for questioning. The investigation is underway, and police are also expected to inspect the hotel premises to ascertain how the blaze actually started.
According to NDTV, the Kolkata hotel fire comes just two days after another deadly blaze at Hotel Bideshini in Birbhum district, West Bengal. The hotel is located near Tarapith Temple. At least eight people were killed in that incident, while several others were injured and rushed to hospital for treatment on August 17, 2026.
