First Look Of India’s First Hydrogen-Powered Train Revealed! Promises Cleaner Rail Travel

India's first hydrogen powered train

India is moving towards cleaner and more advanced transport solutions. We now have another major upgrade to look forward to. It’s India’s first hydrogen-powered train, and the first look of this new train, which will be launched in Haryana, has now been revealed. Read on to know more!

India’s First Hydrogen-Powered Train

India’s first hydrogen-powered train will run between Jind and Sonipat in Haryana. This train is blue in colour with some white strips. What is different in this train? As per Travel and Tour World, this step marks the shift from diesel trains to cleaner, zero-emission travel. This is not the plan anymore; it is already in motion. The train has successfully completed initial testing at Jind Junction. It will soon begin its operations.

Unlike other trains that use diesel and cause pollution, this train runs on hydrogen fuel cells. In this system, electricity is generated through a reaction between hydrogen and oxygen. Because of this process, it releases only water vapour instead of harmful emissions. This makes it a cleaner and more sustainable option for both passenger and freight transport.

More About This New Train

The new train is designed to run on non-electrified tracks. This is useful for many rural and regional routes in India. Travel and Tour World reported that this train will first be launched on the Jind and Sonipat route, and will later be expanded to other areas. A hydrogen refuelling station has also been set up in Jind.

Early tests show that the hydrogen-powered train performs almost like diesel trains in terms of speed and efficiency. Hydrogen fuel cells are more energy-efficient than diesel engines, which means they can produce more energy with less fuel. In the long run, this may also help Indian Railways reduce operating costs while keeping the system cleaner. This train upgrade also aligns with India’s long-term goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2070.
