We come bearing good news for you all! On Friday, the Maharashtra government approved the 134-km Neral-Shirur highway. Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar announced that the new corridor will improve connectivity between Mumbai, Pune, Marathwada, and Ahilyanagar. Here’s everything you need to know.
Maharashtra Approves Neral-Shirur Highway
In what is being seen as a game-changing infrastructure push in Maharashtra, the much-anticipated Neral-Shirur highway has finally received the state government’s green signal. According to Hindustan Times, the new highway will begin at Neral in Raigad district and connect to Shirur on the Pune-Ahilyanagar highway, providing faster, more efficient and modern connectivity not only between Mumbai and Pune but also to the Marathwada and Ahilyanagar regions.
Beyond easing traffic congestion, the highway is expected to boost economic, industrial and logistics growth across Raigad, Pune, Marathwada and Ahilyanagar by reducing travel time and improving the movement of both freight and passengers along key corridors. It is also set to benefit major industrial hubs, including Khed, Talegaon, Chakan, Ranjangaon and Supa MIDC.
How Will The Highway Help Decongest Mumbai-Pune Expressway?
The Neral-Shirur highway will pass through Neral, Vandre, Pait, Shiroli, Pabal, Malthan, and Shirur. According to reports, it will significantly ease traffic pressure on the existing Pune-Shirur corridor while providing a direct, high-speed link to Mumbai and the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT).
It is also expected to serve as an alternative to the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, helping reduce congestion on the heavily used route. The highway will offer a parallel corridor for motorists travelling to parts of the Pune district, thereby easing the load on the expressway. This comes at a time when motorists have increasingly expressed concern about worsening traffic on the already congested stretch.
