Gujarat: Private Party Turns Into Illegal Lion Safari In Gir; 7 People Arrested

Lion Safari Gujarat

Gujarat is the only place in India known for its lion safaris, where people can see the majestic Asiatic lions roaming free in the wild. However, the Forest Department has recently busted an illegal wildlife safari racket in Gujarat’s Gir Somnath district and arrested seven people. Here’s what happened.

7 Arrested For Illegal Lion Safari In Gujarat

Illegal safaris and unauthorised lion safari bookings are serious criminal offences in Gujarat. The Gir National Park region is the last remaining home of the endangered Asiatic lions, and the Forest Department takes strict action to curb such activities. According to NDTV, an unauthorised wildlife-viewing racket in Gujarat’s Gir Somnath district was recently busted.

During a targeted operation, authorities arrested seven people involved in the racket. Reportedly, one individual was responsible for organising illegal lion sightings on his property. A group of people held a private party at the property before venturing directly into protected forest zones at night to see the lions.

Alcohol Found In The Vehicle

According to NDTV, Forest Department personnel on routine night patrol spotted the trespassers in the sensitive habitat. Upon noticing the law enforcement team, the suspects panicked and fled the scene on foot. They left their Mahindra Thar vehicle deep inside the forest boundary.

Authorities immediately launched a search operation, which resulted in the arrest of the suspects. Moreover, they imposed a collective financial penalty of ₹4 lakh on the seven people. That’s not all. The Gujarat Forest Department also uncovered multiple bottles of foreign liquor hidden inside the vehicle. Since alcohol possession and consumption violate local state laws, the department transferred custody of the vehicle and the two primary accused to civil law enforcement.
