India Grows 50% Of The World’s Mangoes But Why Does It Export Only 1% Of It?

Mango Export India

No matter where you are in India, the arrival of summer brings an irresistible craving for mangoes. And that’s the beauty of the country—you’ll find mangoes everywhere, each variety offering a unique and delicious taste. In fact, did you know that India is the world’s largest producer of mangoes, accounting for nearly 50% of global production? Yet it exports only about 1% of its total output. But why? Scroll on to find out!

India, The Largest Producer Of Mangoes In The World

According to The Times of India, India grows over 1,500 varieties of mangoes and produces more than 24 million metric tonnes of the fruit annually. This makes India the source of nearly half of the world’s mango supply. However, despite this, it exports only about 1% of its total production. The reason is simple—overwhelming domestic demand.

Thanks to India’s population of over 1.4 billion, domestic demand is so high that most of the mango supply is consumed locally, leaving little for exports. According to India Herald, the country exports only around 32,000 metric tonnes, which is just about 0.13% of its total output.

As per reports, India’s domestic mango market is valued at around $2.90 billion and is expected to reach $3.97 billion by 2030. Major producing states include Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Odisha, West Bengal, Jharkhand, and Chhattisgarh.

Which Country Exports Most Mangoes In The World?

Despite large-scale production, India exports only a small share of its mangoes. In contrast, Mexico is the world’s largest mango exporter, shipping over 450,000 metric tonnes annually to markets including the United States, Canada, and Europe. Nearly 80% of these exports go to the United States alone, with varieties like Ataulfo, Kent, and Tommy Atkins in high demand.

Apart from Mexico, other major mango exporters include Brazil (around $345 million), the Netherlands, the United States, Germany, Portugal, South Africa, and Pakistan, which are among the top exporters of mangoes globally.
