Possible Glacial Lake Outburst Flood Threat Put Tawang On High Alert

In Tawang district, officials have warned about a possible Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF). As per India Today NE, after receiving information from the Centre for Earth Science and Himalayan Studies (CESHS), the disaster management department issued an high alert in Tawang. The warning was also shared with the Indian Army, ITBP, and BRO so that all agencies stay ready and can respond quickly if any emergency happens.

Tawang Deputy Commissioner and District Disaster Management Authority Chairman Namgyal Angmo has urged residents to stay alert. Officials also asked them to follow all official advisories. Superintendent of Police Tasi Darang advised people living along the Mago Chu and Tawang Chu river systems, especially those in low-lying areas, to keep emergency supplies ready and remain prepared for any emergency.

Authorities Inspect Khangri Glacier Amid GLOF Concerns

To understand the situation closely, officials from Thingbu Assistant Commissioner Thutan Wangchu, along with people from Mago village, decided to visit and inspect the Khangri Glacier. Reaching the location, they saw that the glacier had lost a lot of snow and ice over the years. It is due to rising temperatures and climate change.

After that, they also checked Neh-Goh Tso. It is a glacial lake below the glacier, and during the inspection, they found that its water level is safe and flowing normally into the Mago Chu river. The area currently looks stable, so there is no immediate flood risk. 

Authorities have asked people in Tawang district to follow safety guidelines and stay alert.
