Should You Drink Orange Juice In The Morning?

Speaking to Hindustan Times, Dr Mukesh Nandal, a senior gastroenterologist, explained that while citrus fruits and juices are packed with nutrients, many people automatically assume they are always a healthy choice. However, consuming them on an empty stomach can lead to gastric discomfort, including bloating, a burning sensation in the chest, and persistent upper abdominal discomfort.

According to Hindustan Times, citrus fruits can trigger such symptoms because they are naturally acidic. While oranges, lemons, and sweet limes offer several health benefits, their acidity may irritate the digestive system, especially when consumed first thing in the morning on an empty stomach.

The reason is simple: these fruits introduce a concentrated dose of citric acid directly into the gastrointestinal tract. Without food to act as a buffer and reduce its impact, the acid can cause irritation and discomfort.

Not A Thumb Rule For Everyone!

It is worth noting that not everyone needs to avoid drinking orange juice in the morning. According to Dr Mukesh Nandal, people with a healthy digestive system can generally tolerate citrus fruits and juices without any issues. Problems are more likely to arise in those with pre-existing digestive conditions, especially when citrus fruits are consumed on an empty stomach.

So, if you’re prone to acidity, have gastritis, or suffer from gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), it may be best to avoid citrus fruits and juices at breakfast. The gastroenterologist further advised that citrus fruits should ideally be consumed in moderation and preferably after lunch or as an evening snack. Doing so can significantly reduce the chances of triggering digestive discomfort and related symptoms.
