Synthetic food colours can pose potential health risks. While they may be considered safe in small amounts, their long-term use can seriously affect health. With this in mind, the government of Jammu and Kashmir has issued a public notice banning synthetic food colours in ready-to-eat food items. This ban includes Wazwan dishes, biryani, pickles, and many other meat-based preparations.

According to a report by Greater Kashmir, the public notice refers to analytical reports from the National Food Laboratory, Ghaziabad. Tests found certain food samples, such as kebabs, biryani, pickles, and chicken tikka, unsafe due to the presence of food colours like Carmoisine, Tartrazine, and Erythrosine. These colours can affect liver and kidney function.

The public notice also states that under Regulation 3.1.2 and Appendix A of the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011, the use of synthetic food colours is prohibited. Furthermore, as per Section 59 of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, violations are punishable.

Those found flouting these regulations may face imprisonment for up to three months and a fine of up to ₹3 lakh. The notice strictly warns all food business operators (FBOs) involved in the manufacturing, preparation, processing, sale, or service of ready-to-eat food. They must avoid using these synthetic colours. The public notice particularly highlights meat-based food items such as kebabs, Wazwan, biryani, chicken tikka, and pickles.
