From the stunning beaches of the Gold Coast and iconic wildlife to the cultural richness of Melbourne, Australia is one of the most popular destinations for travel lovers across the world. And it seems like it is fast gaining popularity among Indian travel lovers as well! According to a Moneycontrol report, Australia welcomed 4.53 lakh Indian tourists for the year ended May 2025. This made India the 5th-largest tourism market for Australia.
Tourists From India Fuel Australia’s Tourism Boom
Indian travellers are playing a crucial role in Australia’s tourism boom. According to a Moneycontrol report, India ranks 5th among Australia’s inbound tourism markets. Up by almost 10%, the country witnessed 4,53,000 visitors from India for the year ended May 2025.
Besides adding tourist numbers, Indians are also paying big and staying longer in Australia. The report showed that Indian visitors spent around AUD 2.7 billion during this period, a notable 14% more than in 2024. The number of stays by Indians has reached almost 29 million for the year ended May 2025. This is 21% more, as compared to the previous year.
The report showed that travellers from India aren’t just limiting themselves to three or four popular cities in Australia. They are now exploring new states and territories in the island nation and making the most of it! While talking to Moneycontrol, Nishant Kashikar, Country Manager–India & Gulf, Tourism Australia, mentioned that Australia has climbed from being the 20th-largest outbound destination for Indians to the 10th-largest in recent years.

What’s Driving This Surge?
Sports like cricket and rugby, and concerts are some of the driving forces for Indian travellers’ rising interest in Australia. More than 6,000 Indians travelled to catch live test matches in Australia last year. About 15,000 travelled to watch the ICC World Cup, and many are now heading there to watch concerts, whenever they happen.
During the Border-Gavaskar Series, India recorded an average spend of $7,000 plus. This shows how the tourists aren’t shying away from spending big on holidays now. With the upcoming Brisbane Olympics in 2032, Australia’s tourism board is positive about an increase in tourist arrivals from India.
