Mumbai’s Madh Island and Versova could soon be connected by a ₹2,395-crore cable-stayed flyover, reducing the travel time between the two western suburbs from the current 60–90 minutes to around 10 minutes. The BMC plans to begin construction after the monsoon and aims to open the bridge by 2029, subject to necessary approvals. Scroll down to know more.

Madh Island-Versova Travel Time To Drop To 10 Minutes

Currently, there is no direct road connection between Madh Island and Versova, which are separated by Malad Creek. People travelling between the two areas have to take a longer 18–20 km road route, with the journey taking about an hour or more depending on traffic.

According to reports by The Indian Express, a jetty service operates between the two areas, but it is available for only around eight months a year and remains suspended during the monsoon. Limited frequency also means that the service is not always a practical option for commuters.

The proposed bridge will provide a direct link across Malad Creek, making it easier for residents of the islands to access hospitals, schools and other essential facilities. The proposed 2.06-km cable-stayed bridge will have four vehicular lanes and a wider carriageway designed to accommodate increasing traffic volumes.

What Will The Madh Island-Versova Bridge Look Like?

The project was first planned in the BMC’s Development Plan in 1967, but it took decades to move towards implementation. It was formally proposed in 2015, while the final blueprint was completed in 2020 and work orders were issued in 2024. The BMC has already begun preliminary activities, including soil testing and surveys. However, civil construction will begin only after the Bombay High Court grants the required clearance. The last hearing took place in July, with the final hearing expected by September.

According to BMC officials, the bridge has been designed to minimise environmental impact. Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Abhijit Bangar said the cable-stayed design would require limited piling work, helping reduce damage to the surrounding environment.

If approvals and construction progress as planned, the long-awaited connection could significantly transform travel between Madh Island and Versova, replacing a lengthy road journey with a direct 10-minute route.

Good news for Mumbai people.
