B. Merwan & Co Shuts Down On Grant Road, Mumbai

As of January 1, 2026, Mumbai’s iconic B. Merwan & Co has shut down. Located opposite Grant Road railway station, the Irani café was started by Boman Merwan nearly 112 years ago. According to Mid-Day, the closure came as a surprise to many, with the news spreading largely through word of mouth among loyal patrons.

As per the notice on the eatery’s door, the iconic cafe closed business on the first day of 2026. “We thank you for your patronage,” the sign further read. Mid-Day also reported that back in 2014, B. Merwan & Co temporarily shut down for repairs but reopened soon after, much to the relief of its loyal patrons. This time, however, the news seems permanent.

A Century Old Legacy

B. Merwan & Co opened its doors in Mumbai in 1914 and went on to earn a loyal following for its beloved mawa cakes, maska khari, plum cake, cookies, and, of course, bun maska with chai. One of the city’s most time-tested gems, the Irani café often featured on Mumbai’s must-have lists for its simple, pocket-friendly fare.

Following the news of its closure, many heartbroken patrons took to social media to share their memories and disappointment. Several lamented missing the chance to enjoy one last meal or cup of chai there, purely for nostalgia.
