Imported Animals India

The landmark India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) will come into force on July 15, 2026. Under this deal, India has waived off customs duty and Integrated Goods and Services Tax (IGST) on specified categories of animals from the UK. Here’s all you need to know about this.

India Waives Off Imported Animals Taxes Under India-UK CETA

According to The Economic Times, India has waived customs duty on certain animals imported temporarily under the India-UK CETA. The exemption applies to animals brought into the country for shows, exhibitions, competitions, demonstrations, and specific public functions.

The duty waiver also covers police dogs, sniffer dogs, and guide dogs. However, the exemption is available only if the animals are re-exported after the event or purpose for which they were brought into India.

Under this waiver, importers must submit a declaration with the bill of entry confirming that the animals are being imported for an eligible event or activity.

Here’s All You Need To Know About This

The Economic Times reported that importers must execute a bond equal to the value of the imported animals and provide a bank guarantee or cash deposit worth 110% of the customs duty that would otherwise be payable.

However, this requirement does not apply to imports made by the Central or state governments, Union Territory administrations, diplomatic missions in India, or international organisations notified under the United Nations (Privileges and Immunities) Act, 1947.

Furthermore, the animals must be re-exported within six months of customs clearance. For imports by government bodies, diplomatic missions, and notified international organisations, the Commissioner of Customs may extend this period by six months at a time, up to a maximum of two years.
