It’s not new to see some people disrespecting their elders or not caring for them. That said, not everyone is the same; there’s always a mix of good and bad. The Telangana Assembly has taken a strong step to protect senior citizens. On Sunday, it passed the ‘Telangana Employees Accountability and Monitoring of Parental Support Bill, 2026.’ Here’s what it means!
How Is Telangana Protecting Senior Citizens?
The Telangana Assembly has passed the Telangana Employees Accountability and Monitoring of Parental Support Bill, 2026. So, what does this actually mean? As per Hindustan Times, the new law focuses on making sure elderly parents are treated with dignity and care. It clearly explains the responsibilities children, especially working professionals, have towards their parents.
Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy said the bill goes beyond the existing national law, the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007. He explained that while the central law already exists, this new bill expands its scope further. The state law will apply not just to government employees but also to private employees and even public representatives.

What Does This New Telangana Law Mean?
Under this bill, individuals must take care of their elderly parents. Hindustan Times reported that if they fail to do so, authorities will deduct either 15% of their salary or ₹10,000, whichever is lower. This amount will then be given directly to the parents.
During the discussion, the Chief Minister referred to the case of Vijaypat Singhania. He shared how the businessman transferred all his assets to his son, but was later left without support. Meanwhile, the Allahabad High Court said that the Senior Citizens Act cannot be used to solve property or ownership disputes. In simple terms, this means the law has its limits. Because of this, there is a need for stronger and clearer laws to better protect elderly parents and handle such situations properly.
