All About Kalka-Shimla Toy Train

The Kalka to Shimla toy train is a famous and historic train ride through the Himalayan foothills. It passes through more than 100 tunnels and 800 bridges, giving travellers beautiful views of mountains, valleys, and forests. The ride takes 4 to 7 hours, depending on the train.

During British rule, Shimla was the summer capital, but reaching it was difficult and risky. To make travel easier, the British started the Kalka-Shimla narrow-gauge train in November 1903. Lord Curzon enjoyed the first ride, and since then, the train has run daily

There are several train options for this route, including the Rail Motor Car, Shivalik Deluxe Express, and Himalayan Queen, with fares ranging from ₹160 to ₹510 per person. Major stops include Kalka, Solan, and Shimla, and the best time to travel is winter for snow or monsoon for lush greenery.
