Mumbai Metro has been a game changes for the commuters. It has made travel quicker, gave comfortable commuters bringing relief from the local trains and the huge traffic jams. But some metro projects are facing some challenges and one of such is Mumbai Metro 7A. Scroll down to know what happened!

Why Is Mumbai Metro Line 7A Construction Delayed?

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) faced challenges in the construction of Mumbai Metro Line 7A due to pending approvals. As per Hindustan Times, the project was delayed due to a height restriction issue near Mumbai airport. The authority is still waiting for the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to grant final clearance for the project.

However, after construction remained suspended for months, the authorities have now resumed work despite not having the final approval. The design error near Vile Parle East caused the metro’s overhead wires to exceed the permitted height limit by 2.5 metres. This mistake has put a 1-km elevated stretch of the 3.4-km metro route at risk of demolition.

Metro Project Receives No-Objection Certificate

In March 2024, the Mumbai Metro 7A received no-objection certification by AAI but the engineers failed to mentioned that extra height needed for overheard wires. Since January 2024, the authorities are seeking approval from AAI. If the request is not accepted then MMRDA could face a loss of around ₹250 crore.

The MMRDA feels that the height difference is just minor because the buildings and trees nearby are more taller than metro structure. However, the final decision will be made by AAI. In the past few months, MMRDA has held meetings with Mumbai airport, AAI and the Ministry of Civil Aviation to discuss the challenge. Airport team even visit the site. The 3.42-km Metro Line 7A is expected to open in March 2028 at the earliest. It will connect Gundavali to Terminal 2 of CSMIA.
