Since the Mumbai Metro was introduced, it has taken away some of the stress of commuting in local trains, especially in the scorching heat. But now, these Metro trains are also getting packed during peak hours. To add more space for commuters, Mumbai Metro One is planning to add 22 more coaches to its trains. Scroll down for the details!
Mumbai Metro One To Add 22 More Coaches
Mumbai Metro One is adding 22 more coaches to its fleet, and the process has already begun. Under this plan, some of the existing four-car trains on the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar corridor will be converted into six-car trains. According to Mid Day report, the upgrade is expected to increase the line’s capacity by more than 50%. However, the change will take some time due to MMOPL’s ongoing financial restructuring and the availability of funds.
The demand for adding more coaches on this line has been around for years. Currently, a four-car train can carry around 1,178 passengers at a time. A six-car train, on the other hand, can accommodate around 1,792 passengers.

Why Is The Line Facing More Pressure?
The pressure on Metro Line 1 has increased as Mumbai’s Metro network has expanded. As per Mid Day report, more passengers now use Line 1 after travelling on Lines 3, 2A and 7. Now, interchange stations like Marol Naka, Western Express Highway, Andheri and Ghatkopar are busier, especially during peak hours.
Though MMOPL (Mumbai Metro One Private Limited) wants to add coaches as soon as possible, funding remains the big challenge. With the company going through financial restructuring, the availability of money will affect how quickly the plan can be implemented.
