In Surat, a new fish market has opened and has become a talking point after a board bearing Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s name was put up at its entrance. The board was installed without permission from the civic body. Read on to know more!
Surat Fish Market Named After PM Modi Sparks Controversy
The fish market was built by the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) at a cost of around ₹3.9 crore. As per Outlook Business, it is located at Lakkadkot in the Nanpura area. However, a photo of the market has now gone viral online, showing a board that reads “Shree Narendra Modi Wholesale Fish Market” and features the Prime Minister’s photograph.
But here’s the twist! The use of PM Modi’s name on the board has not received official permission. SMC Executive Engineer RD Ganjawala said that naming a civic property requires approval from the Cultural Committee or General Body. However, no such approval has been given for the fish market yet.
The Surat Fish Merchant Association had asked the SMC to name the market after PM Modi. However, the board was put up before the civic body gave its approval. SMC officials reached the spot to remove it, but later left after traders assured them that they would take down the board themselves.

What Is The Alternative Name Suggested For The Fish Market?
The issue over naming the fish market has divided the traders. Outlook Business reported that senior trader Surendra Lashkari is against naming the fish market after PM Modi because he is a strict vegetarian. He also accused association president Kalpesh Navsariwala of putting up the board without permission. He suggested naming the market after the Kahar Machhi community instead.
Navsariwala defended the decision, saying the association had passed a resolution to name the market after PM Modi. He also highlighted the government’s support for fishermen through the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana.
