It often leads to strict action when anyone disrespects national symbols. In this context, the Union Cabinet has taken a significant step regarding one of India’s most iconic patriotic compositions, Vande Mataram. Read on to know more!
Vande Mataram To Have Same Status As National Anthem
The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved a proposal to give the national song Vande Mataram the same importance as the national anthem, Jana Gana Mana. According to India Today, this decision was taken in the first Cabinet meeting held after the election results in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam, and Puducherry.
The government has decided to make changes in the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act so that Vande Mataram gets the same legal protection as other national symbols. This means it will be treated with the same importance as the national anthem and flag. Once this rule becomes law, if anyone disrespects or interrupts the singing of Vande Mataram, it will be considered a serious offence, and strict legal action can be taken against them.

150 Years Of The National Song
The timing of this decision makes it even more special. As per India Today, India is celebrating 150 years of Vande Mataram, which adds more meaning to this move by the cabinet. Officials also shared that similar steps were taken earlier in 2005 to protect the national flag from any kind of misuse or disrespect.
What’s interesting is that this demand is not new. The idea of giving Vande Mataram equal legal status was already discussed in parliament in December last year, during a special session linked to its 150th anniversary. This shows that the move has been in discussion for some time now. The government is expected to bring this amendment to Parliament soon.
