Fighting the long hard battle of tackling COVID-19 in a country with over 1.37 billion people can be quite a task. But it gets harder when doctors, nurses and medical staff don’t have proper protective gear for the same. Indian doctors and nurses wear raincoats and helmets to treat coronavirus patients due to lack of protective gear. Doctors, nurses, paramedics and ambulance drivers are putting their lives severely at risk in order to prevent the spread of the virus and save those who are battling for their lives in hospitals around the country. What’s In It?

Indian doctors and nurses are not being given with the most basic and essential things to keep them safe from the deadly disease. A report by Reuters states that the central government has claimed that they have been trying to procure protective gear in bulk quantities both locally as well as from countries like China and South Korea. This news has in fact thrown light on the sorry state of the healthcare system in our country, leaving no resort but for doctors and nurses in the country to don helmets and raincoats to protect themselves while treating patients suffering from coronavirus.

Many doctors have expressed concerns over becoming carriers of the deadly disease just because they have no access to personal protective equipment(PPE). Studies suggest that over 100,000 people might get infected by mid-May because India’s healthcare system remains underfunded and can put alot of strain on doctors. In Kolkata’s Beleghata Infectious Disease Hospital, medical professionals were provided with raincoats to cover themselves while treating COVID-19 patients. But doctors are not revealing their identities since they could get into trouble. Dr Sandeep Garg of ESI Hospital in Haryana informed Reuters that he puts on a helmet with a visor in the front, in order to cover his face and add another layer over the surgical mask. What’s More?

A senior government official in the capital, who wanted to remain unnamed informed the news agency that they’re literally living on a prayer as they can’t save themselves by relying on the healthcare system. The conclusion of the Reuters report states that the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare didn’t respond or make a statement. And India has one of the lowest percentages of its GDP spent on public health, which is just around 1.3%. Well, we sincerely hope and pray that the government will address this matter soon and equip medical professional with proper protective gear at the earliest. After all, it’s a collective battle to combat this deadly virus and we can’t afford to put the lives of medical professionals at risk due to lack of protective gear.
