Since 2014, June 21 has been observed as the International Day of Yoga, celebrating yoga not just as a form of exercise but as a holistic way of life. Marking its 12th edition this year, people across India and around the world rolled out their yoga mats to perform asanas and reaffirm their commitment to health, wellness, and mindfulness. From celebrities to political leaders and citizens, people from all walks of life came together to celebrate the occasion. Here’s a glimpse of how India marked International Yoga Day 2026.

International Yoga Day 2026: India Comes Together To Celebrate Wellness

1. President Droupadi Murmu

Indian President Droupadi Murmu led the International Yoga Day celebrations in Madhya Pradesh. Urging people to make yoga an integral part of their daily lives, she performed asanas at the State-level event in Jabalpur.

2. PM Narendra Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, one of the biggest advocates of yoga in India, participated in the Yoga Day celebration at the historic Red Road in Kolkata, West Bengal. Joining thousands of participants, he was seen performing various asanas and interacting with attendees, even helping some correct their postures during the session.

3. Akshay Kumar

Celebrated under the theme ‘Yoga for Healthy Ageing’, the 12th International Day of Yoga also saw Akshay Kumar taking part in a mass celebration in Delhi.

4. Indo-Tibetan Border Police

The 47th Battalion Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) marked the occasion with a session at Pangong Tso, 14,000 ft above sea level! Meanwhile, the personnel of the 24th Battalion and villagers held an early-morning yoga session on the banks of Pangong Lake.

5. EAM S. Jaishankar

India’s External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar, along with ambassadors representing different nations, took part in a mass yoga session at Nehru Park in Delhi.

6. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh participated in International Yoga Day celebrations in Shillong, Meghalaya. Meanwhile, Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi joined the observances in Tezpur, Assam, while Navy Chief Admiral K. Swaminathan took part in the programme held in Kolkata.

7. Yoga Day Celebration At Jaldapara National Park

Even nature participated in the Yoga Day celebration at Jaldapara National Park in West Bengal. A group of yoga practitioners were captured doing yoga while a herd of elephants looked on patiently – showcasing the harmony between humans and nature.

8. Yoga Practice Reaches Christ The Redeemer, Brazil

Not just India, International Yoga Day celebrations reached Christ the Redeemer in Brazil as well! A special yoga session was organised at the iconic monument, drawing a huge turnout.
