Jammu will soon turn into a hub for religion-based tourism with the introduction of the Jammu Pilgrim Tourism Circuit. A million people visit the holy shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi every year in Jammu. Now, the government is making efforts to help persuade these devotees to discover other spiritual and heritage-based places here. With planned pilgrimage circuits and better infrastructure, Jammu aims to enhance travel beyond Vaishno Devi.
Jammu Pilgrim Tourism Circuit To Promote Regional Tourism
Considering the gigantic potential of pilgrim tourism, the government is launching new tours under the initiative of Jammu Pilgrim Tourism. As reported by Hindustan Times, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is planning three-day, four-day, and week-long religious pilgrimage circuits for lesser-known important religious destinations.
These initiatives aim to promote a minimum of 10-15% of the one crore Vaishno Devi pilgrims to visit these places every year. It will also generate economic gains for the local people. To achieve this, the tourism department is expanding Jammu City’s infrastructure and promoting new destinations. Several projects under the State Capex Budget and Swadesh Darshan Scheme are underway.
Key Developments To Boost Jammu’s Tourism
The government is emphasising cultural and heritage conservation, with restoration underway at Bahu Fort, Mubarak Mandi, Raghunath Bazaar, and several temples under the Smart City project.
Major highways are being improved, and pedestrian-friendly walkways are being constructed to facilitate easy access to major religious destinations. Additionally, electric buses are being added to facilitate environmentally friendly public transport, curbing congestion and making travel easier.
Recreational and leisure areas are also being created to make Jammu a well-rounded tourist destination. The Tawi riverfront is being revamped with walkways, cycling tracks, and resting areas. Musical fountains with light shows at Bagh-e-Bahu will offer a unique attraction for locals and tourists.
A ropeway scheme from Mohmaya to Bagh-e-Bahu is also underway, augmenting accessibility to scenic and religious destinations.
