In the heart of Meerut, there is a basilica, an architectural marvel and a pilgrimage site for Catholics. With its rich history, stunning architecture, and religious significance, this Basilica of Our Lady of Graces in Sardhana is a true treasure of India. Built in the 18th century, this basilica showcases a blend of European and Indian architectural styles.

Historical Origins Of This Basilica 

The Basilica of Our Lady of Graces in Sardhana is more than just a place of worship; it is a symbol of faith, cultural fusion, and historical significance. The story of the Basilica of Our Lady of Graces begins in the late 18th century with Begum Samru.  Begum Samru was originally a dancer, but her life took a dramatic turn when she married a European mercenary, Walter Reinhardt Sombre. Because of her exceptional diplomacy skills, the couple had earned the Mughals’ trust. After her husband’s death, she became a shrewd military leader and ruler of the principality of Sardhana.

However, Begum Samru converted to Catholicism.  Later, she became the sole Catholic ruler from India. She inherited Reinhardt’s jagir (land parcel) of Sardhana, where she built the Basilica of Our Lady of Graces – a church dedicated to the Virgin Mary — in 1822. This endeavour resulted in the magnificent basilica that now graces the town of Sardhana.

Apart from its religious importance, the Basilica of Our Lady of Graces is a cultural heritage site. The fusion of European and Indian architectural styles that occurred during the colonial period. It serves as a reminder of India’s pluralistic history, where diverse cultures coexisted and influenced each other.

An Architectural Marvel

This gem was designed by Italian architect Antonio (or Anthony) Reghelini. The Basilica of Our Lady of Graces is an architectural marvel that showcases a blend of European and Indian architectural styles. The basilica’s facade is an exquisite example of Mughal architecture, featuring delicate minarets and intricate floral designs. Inside, the church is adorned with beautifully painted ceilings and ornate decorations.

One of the most striking features of the basilica is its unique blend of Eastern and Western influences. While the exterior reflects Mughal architecture, the interior is reminiscent of European cathedrals, with its high arches, stained glass windows, and altar adorned with religious artwork.
