Just In: IPL 2025 Suspended Indefinitely Amid Rising Tensions

Amid escalating tensions with Pakistan, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has indefinitely suspended the Indian Premier League 2025 (IPL). This news comes after the match between Punjab Kings and the Delhi Capitals was abandoned midway in Dharamshala due to air raid alerts in Pathankot and Jammu on May 8.

IPL Halted Indefinitely Amid India-Pakistan Tensions

As per a report by India Today, the Indian Premier League (IPL) has been suspended indefinitely by the BCCI after an emergency meeting with tournament officials on May 9. The decision was taken keeping in mind the safety of players, support staff and fans. A senior BCCI official stated to India Today that it doesn’t look “nice” for cricket to go on normally while the country is at war.

This IPL suspension by the BCCI throws the fate of the remainder of the season into uncertainty. IPL 2025 was scheduled to conclude on May 25 in Kolkata. The safety of Indian and global cricket players is of utmost importance, as is that of the support staff and fans.

On May 8, the floodlight in the north-east part of the Dharamshala stadium was the first to shut down. This caused an initial delay. To avoid panic amongst fans and players, authorities cited technical failure as a reason to evacuate the stadium and prevent panic. Spectators were immediately evacuated after air raid alerts were sounded in nearby regions like Jammu and Pathankot.

Safety Of Players, Staff & Fans A Priority

Earlier, IPL chairman Arun Dhumal stated that the May 9 match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Lucknow Super Giants would continue as planned. But the deteriorating security situation and escalating tension with Pakistan on May 8 night led to a reversal. Dhumal had earlier announced that the situation was being reviewed and would be taken in consultation with government agencies based on logistics available.
