Think beach destination and Goa would instantly come to mind. The buzzing nightlife and cute beach shacks serving Feni and Rava Fish Fry add to the charm of the coastal holiday getaway. Well, Karnataka might soon follow suit. The tourism department may soon give its beaches a makeover with shacks, liquor and a thriving nightlife. Here’s more to it.
Karnataka To Have Shacks, Liquor & Nightlife On Beaches
As per an article by The New Indian Express or TNIE, the tourism department of Karnataka has plans to turn its beaches into tourist attractions. Tourism Department Director and Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation (KSTDC) Managing Director, Dr K V Rajendra addressed the audience at ‘Connect 2012’.
Speaking to travel, tourism and hospitality stakeholders, Dr K V Rajendra stated that the department was planning to permit shacks and liquor on beaches. Moreover, he stated that these changes will most likely be incorporated into the new Tourism Policy of Karnataka.
If Karnataka beaches need to attract more crowds like Goa, Rajendra admitted that things needed to change. Stakeholders requested the tourism department relax certain restrictions on the beaches, especially regarding timings and liquor consumption.
New Tourism Policy To Ape Goa
In order to ensure the safety of beachgoers, the tourism department will install streetlights on the beaches. It’s also a nudge to locals and holidaymakers to spend more time on the beaches during night hours. The TNIE article also informed that district officials have been directed to look for private land parcels.
This is to promote Tent Tourism in Karnataka. Also, visitors are permitted to stay in beaches within Mangaluru city till 1 AM. This is after the Karnataka government extended the business hours of restaurants, shops and licensed establishments in the city.
But Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner Mullai Muhilan M P stated that he needs to find out from the police department as to why people aren’t permitted near beaches after 9 PM, currently. Karnataka’s new tourism policy will have a separate chapter for tourism development in the coastal region in a bid to attract both domestic and international tourists.
So, folks, are you excited for Karnataka to perhaps become the new Goa?
